A Top End Staycation at Hideaway Litchfield

Living in Darwin has many perks.

We get cheap and abundant mangoes, hilarious headlines courtesy of the NT news and the most amazing monsoons.

We also enjoy being just a short drive from Litchfield – an epic national park which I have visited many times before. Litchfield (or Litchy as it is affectionately dubbed by us locals) is home to a lot of beautiful scenery, but it is its swimming holes and waterfalls that are truly spectacular.

So, when I was offered the opportunity to return to Litchy and stay in some brand new accommodation within the park, I jumped at the opportunity.

Hideaway Litchfield is a set of two cabins which are situated in the gloriously remote north-west corner of Litchfield National Park. This part of the park is far less frequented than other popular spots, making it the perfect place to hide away (pun totally intended, I couldn’t help it) after a big day of exploring some of the NTs most beautiful waterfalls and waterholes.

We started our day in the wee hours of the morning, leaving Darwin at around sunrise. We arrived into Litchfield very early, and decided to start our adventure with an early morning swim at one of my favourite spots – Florence Falls. Getting there early means having the place to yourself, which is super gorgeous but also slightly unnerving, if a croc had found its way in there you’d be the only snack in sight!

Saltwater crocs are pretty much unheard of in Florence, but that knowledge certainly didn’t stop the croc nerves from popping into my head.

We got some epic shots of the falls with Droney Boi, although I very nearly killed him during the landing process…

Next up was the ever popular Buley Rockhole! Jasmine and I enjoyed a refreshing dip in the lower pools and noshed on our lunch snacks before heading off when the pools got too busy.

Also, just a side note, can we all just appreciate what an absolute mega-babe miss Jasmine is?!

By the time early afternoon rolled around, we were finally able to check in to our cabin and explore what would be our cosy little home for the night.

Cabin one is a ground level cabin made from a 40 foot shipping container. It features a kitchen, lounge area, bedroom and bathroom, making superb use of the admittedly limited space.

Wooden decking connects the two separate spaces, whilst the numerous plants help the property blend in seamlessly to its bushland surroundings.

The space is indeed small, but it never feels cramped, instead oozing a special kind of cosiness. It is the perfect size for couples looking for a romantic bush getaway, or even just for two girlfriends keen for a snuggly outback staycation.

If travelling in a group, it is worth knowing that Cabin Two is only a short walk away, although they are situated in such a way that both cabins still retain an utmost privacy despite their relatively close proximity to one another.

The bedroom and ensuite are surprisingly spacious and undeniably good looking. The raw wood feature wall, drop lights and massive feature window all combine to create the perfect space to watch the sun rise and fall, all while snuggled up in bed.

You will find a few goodies hidden in the fridge and pantry (such as bacon, eggs, milk, coffee and perhaps even a few cheeky chocolates) but the cabins are still mostly self catering. Make sure to bring some supplies for dinner, and you’ll definitely want to bring a bottle of wine (or two)

After watching the sunset and taking Droney Boi out for a far less terrifying flight we snuggled up on the couch and watched a film whilst pigging out on guacamole and hommus.

I awoke the next morning to a stunning view from my bed and Jasmine bringing me a freshly brewed coffee. It was the perfect way to end a wonderful little Top End staycation.
